Dr. Butterfield is a cosmetic breast surgeon specializing in the treatment of gynecomastia for men in the Basalt area. Some men will develop excess tissue in their chest area during adolescence. The result can be a chest appearance that looks similar to a woman’s breasts. Gynecomastia accounts for roughly 65 percent of male breast disorders. It is often caused by a hormonal imbalance, but it can also be related to steroid use, or other medications that contain estrogen. Male breast reduction surgery offers men the opportunity to reduce the size of their breasts and improve the look of their chest.

"I have and will continue to recommend Dr. Butterfield. She is nothing short of terrific!"- Anonymous / Healthgrades / Jul 22, 2017
"Dr. Butterfield is everything you hope for in a professional relationship, but very rarely receive. She exceeds the 100% mark. I only wish she could be my primary care provider! ! She verbally and visually educated me in detail about a skin cancer removal and full thickness skin graft. I had 100% confidence that the procedure would be performed as planned. I had minimal pain at both sights and minimal scarring. Since this surgery was a necessity, Dr. Butterfield was kind enough to clean up two old areas of scarring at the donor sight that had caused shelving in my belly. It is sad that our body image affects our attitudes, but it does for the majority of people I know. I am very, very appreciative of her compassion and willingness to help correct past trauma. Dr. Butterfield is without question a compassionate and outstanding surgeon. The medical field needs more professionals like her."- Anonymous / RateMDs / Dec 03, 2016
"Dr. Butterfield made me feel very comfortable and she was honest and she did a wonderful reconstructive surgery for me. I thought I would never feel comfortable with my body after cancer but she has made me feel like cancer did not get the best of me. I beat it and she gave me back what it took from me physically."- Anonymous / UCompareHealthcare / Aug 25, 2016
"Dr. Butterfield is now in Glenwood Springs Colorado I cannot express how wonderful her work is. I am a breast cancer survivor who's first reconstructive surgery was botched horribly. I was so uncomfortable with the outcome I hid behind oversize tops and worse could not even look in the mirror. Dr. Butterfield and her staff have given back my self esteem and made me feel like a very important person not a patient. I would highly recommend Dr. Butterfield before traveling to Denver or Vail for reconstructive surgery she is the best."- Anonymous / RateMDs / Aug 03, 2016
Breast reduction surgery for men is done through a special liposuction technique. Some men with milder cases of gynecomastia may only require liposuction to attain good results. This is performed to remove the fatty tissue residing under the skin. During this approach, a small incision is made around the areola (intra-areolar). This allows access for a suction device to move through the chest and remove fat and tissue. In severe gynecomastia cases, an en bloc resection of excessive breast tissue and tightening of loose skin may be necessary. This includes nipple grafting and may require a staged surgery.
All male breast reduction procedures are performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure at an accredited surgical facility. The surgery typically lasts about an hour. Following surgery, there will be some swellingll not. and a compression garment should be worn for 1-2 weeks. Most patients are able to resume normal work schedules within a few days and incorporate exercise within 4 weeks. This surgery allows men to feel more confident when exposing their chest due to a firmer, flatter chest. In most cases, scarring is inconspicuous.
The cost of male breast reduction varies based on the extent of the surgery. The cost for gynecomastia surgery runs from $4,950 to $8,000 depending on the patient's particulars.

Male Breast Reduction FAQ’s
Will This Help my Pecs?
Every man is born with some soft tissue covering his pectoralis muscles. When this breast tissue overgrows into larger breasts, the pecs are often hidden. Through male breast reduction surgery, the excessive tissue is removed so the natural contour and shape of the chest wall can be seen. Men who wish to tone and strengthen their chest muscles will have equal opportunity to do so. Strength training will help lead to optimal results once this tissue has been removed.
Is Liposuction Always Needed?
In most cases, yes. The soft tissue and fat that collects in excess will need to be removed using liposuction. There are many liposuction techniques to consider. Some are less invasive and can help the skin become tighter on the chest wall. These methods can be discussed during your consultation.
What About Scarring?
Incisions for this surgery are well concealed. They are usually placed around or near the areola and are typically small enough that scarring is minimized. Over time, the incision lines will fade and become almost nonexistent for most men.
